Here in Chicago, between the sometimes blistering summer heat and the ever-looming possibility of another Snowmageddon, we experience what we call a few weeks of ‘perfect’ weather. In our humble opinion, fall in Chicago is the best time of year to be outdoors, enjoying the bright warmth of the sun with a crisp fresh breeze blowing-in off of Lake Michigan. Each autumn, something truly marvelous happens to the North Shore of Chicago, we get lost in the beauty of the season, we become optimists, and for a few blissful months we don’t think about what Old-Man Winter may have in store for us.
On such fall days, we always seem to find ourselves making a trip to one of our favorite local destinations, The Chicago Botanic Garden. Since we are only a hop, skip, and a jump away from The Gardens, this seems like the logical choice to make. While most Chicago residents recommend visiting The Chicago Botanic Garden in late spring or throughout summer when the gardens’ blooms are at their ‘peak’, we strongly feel that to meander the paths in autumn is truly what brings fall to life and is an experience that should not be missed.
The Chicago Botanic Garden, while beautiful in every season, truly come alive with its features of unique harvest fauna. We recommend that you take a few hours to leisurely walk the gardens, drinking-in the quiet and serene elegance of nature. Looking for a way to still experience the gardens but short on time? Try renting a bike and cruise the paths at your own pace. Prefer to sit back and relax while taking in the beauty of the gardens? Just jump on one of the wonderful guided tram tours; overflowing with a plethora of knowledge about the vast garden expanses.
One of our favorite destinations in The Chicago Botanic Garden is The Garden View Café. The menu features, local, sustainably-produced, and seasonal ingredients. It is no wonder that with a delicious vibrant menu, and a beautiful view of the meandering creek and tree banks, The Garden View Café bests our list for one of the best lunch hideaways in Highland Park. We are even more excited by the news that The Garden View Café now serves brunch on weekends. We guarantee that you will see us there this Sunday!
A hidden treasure of The Chicago Botanic Garden is the impressive list of almost daily activities! Every weekend is packed with a festival, a show, or an event that the whole family can participate in. Don’t believe us? Just check out their event calendar here. We are excitedly awaiting the “Night of 1,000 Jack-O’-Lanterns”.
During the few precious weeks of fall weather in Chicago, The Chicago Botanic Garden is, hands down, one of our favorite outdoor destination. We hope to see you there this autumn so that you too can experience the majestic beauty it has to offer!
